EAAA marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025

Each year on 15 June, EAAA joins individuals and organisations across the globe to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This is a day designed to shine a light on the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and to recommit to a society that upholds dignity and respect at every age. 

Elder abuse is a growing and complex problem. It can take different forms including psychological, financial, physical and sexual abuse and neglect and is often hidden behind closed doors.  

Research indicates that 1 in 6 older Australians may be experiencing abuse, most often by someone they know and trust. And unfortunately, these are only the ones who have reported abuse – EAAA believes the real number could be much higher. 

“Elder abuse is not a private matter. It’s a serious human rights violation and requires action at all levels,” said Diedre Timms, EAAA Co-Chair. “WEAAD is a reminder to us to take a moment and listen to older people, learn from their experiences and work together to create a future free from abuse”. 

EAAA encourages everyone to learn the signs of elder abuse, support those at risk and advocate for stronger protections, better services and universal access to specialist support. For more information about elder abuse and pathways to support, visit the  Compass website. 

Stand Up, Speak Out 

As part of our commitment to raising awareness of elder abuse, EAAA and Co-hosts ADA Australia and Caxton Legal Centre are looking forward to Stand Up, Speak Out which is scheduled for 27 – 29 July 2026. 

This conference will bring together advocates, policymakers, researchers, service providers and members of the community to explore solutions under the conference theme. 

“This conference theme is a powerful call to action,” said EAAA Co-Chair Sue Leitch. “We urge all Australians to challenge ageism, listen to the voices of older people and take a stand against abuse”. 

This event will provide a crucial platform for speakers to share their insights and encourage delegates to continue their work, drive change, and be voices for action.
