Lunch & Learn: Beyond the numbers - how gender shapes the experience of elder abuse

Lunch & Learn sessions are a platform for EAAA members to share insights, projects and research. In this presentation on Thursday 13 March, Anna Gillbard from UnitingCare shared information about research in Queensland.

Elder abuse affects both men and women but their experiences, risk factors and barriers to seeking help can differ significantly. So how does gender impact elder abuse? This webinar explored these gendered dynamics using real-world data from UnitingCare’s elder abuse helpline in Queensland. By applying a gender lens, Anna examined how to create more effective prevention and intervention strategies to address the unique challenges faced by older men and women.

  • How gender impacts elder abuse experiences
  • Differences in risk factors for male and female victims
  • Common barriers to change and seeking support
  • Insights from UnitingCare’s elder abuse helpline data.
  • The Gender Lens for Elder Abuse (GLEA) (Barrett et al., in press)
  • How GLEA can be used to promote equality in prevention and intervention
  • Practical strategies for supporting older people affected by abuse.

Anna is an experienced researcher who is passionate about improving the lives of older people.  Her research has been heavily influenced by her practice experience and she focuses on research that has practical implications for policy and practice.

Anna has conducted numerous discrete research projects, with recent examples including elder abuse and housing, predicting co-occurring types of abuse from abuse behaviours, and contextual factors in elder abuse-related deaths. She has also provided input into intrastate, interstate and national research projects.

She is undertaking a PhD at the University of Queensland, investigating dynamics and drivers that underlie the abuse of older people with cognitive impairment.
