EAAA Co-Chair Dr Rebecca Edwards opens Stand Up, Speak Out with a call for action

The opening address at the 2026 Australian Elder Abuse Conference – Stand Up, Speak Out set the tone for three days of challenging conversations, shared learning and a renewed commitment to ending the abuse and mistreatment of older people.

In her address, EAAA Co-Chair Dr Rebecca Edwards described elder abuse as "one of Australia's largest, least funded and most tolerated human rights failures" and challenged delegates to think beyond awareness towards the collective action needed to create lasting change.

Reflecting on the conference theme, Dr Edwards reminded delegates that Stand Up, Speak Out is more than a slogan.

"Stand Up. Speak Out isn't just a slogan for three days. It's a challenge."

Her address explored the impact of ageism, the need for a coordinated national response, and the importance of ensuring older Australians have access to the protection, support and services they deserve, regardless of where they live.

As the conference concluded, Dr Edwards' message remained clear: the conversations started at Stand Up, Speak Out must continue in our workplaces, our communities and wherever decisions are made about older Australians.
