Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA) is pleased to launch Breaking the Silence, a powerful new podcast series sharing the lived experiences of older people who have faced abuse or those who care about them.
Each episode features a real story in the words of the person who lived it or family members who walked alongside them. The voices featured are diverse, honest, and deeply moving. From financial manipulation to emotional abuse, these stories highlight the forms abuse can take and the courage it takes to speak out.
“We often talk about elder abuse in statistics and policy but behind every number is a person,” said Vicki Nash, EAAA’s Policy Manager. “Breaking the Silence honours those who have lived through it, and who are brave enough to share their stories. Their voices demand to be heard.”
The podcast series will be released over three weeks. You’ll hear from Liz, Danny and Francene, who speak openly and powerfully about their experiences and journeys to recovery.
Breaking the Silence was developed following trauma-informed principles, with support provided to participants and options for anonymity.
“When older people speak, we must listen,” said Vicki. “These stories are a reminder that elder abuse can happen to anyone and that change is possible.”
The podcast is available on platforms including Spotify, iHeart Radio and Amazon.
